Many high-impact nonprofits and charitable projects in Africa face challenges in securing international donor funding because they lack a 501(c)(3) status.
A 501(c)(3) is a classification under US law that exempts a public charity from federal income tax. It also allows donors to receive tax deductions for their contributions to that public charity. As a result, many donors and foundations that are based outside the continent require their potential grantees to have this status, ensuring that they can obtain tax deductions.
But securing a 501(c)(3) status can be a lengthy, costly, and time-consuming process for non-US-based organizations. It is not uncommon for the process to last more than 6 months. The result is that several innovative projects miss out on funding deadlines while waiting for this approval.
To bridge the gap and improve access to donor funding for Africa-led nonprofits, community-based organisations (CBOs), and projects that are implementing critical work on the continent, we launched a Fiscal Sponsorship Program at the Financing Alliance for Health.
What is Fiscal Sponsorship?
Fiscal Sponsorship is a legal and financial arrangement where a public charity, known as the fiscal sponsor, allows organizations to utilize its legal & tax-exempt status to receive funding from donors.
What are the Benefits?
Projects and nonprofits that are fiscally sponsored can:
- Solicit and receive tax-deductible donations and grants
- Skip the long, costly, and complex process of direct registration
- Focus on program implementation and spend less time on paperwork while the fiscal sponsor handles the administrative and reporting requirements
For donors, deploying funds using a fiscal sponsor can expand the reach of philanthropic giving. It allows them to support critical projects that would have otherwise been ineligible.
