For World AIDS Day 2018, we want to recognize the critical role that community health workers play in the HIV/AIDS response. Across the globe, CHWs of various kinds—from full-time salaried community health workers to part-time peer educators and mentor mothers—provide services essential to ensurring continuum of care, combating stigma and discrimination, and supporting the psycho-social needs of patients. Without them, many countries would not be able to ensure widespread access to quality HIV/AIDS services.
As we celebrate achievements and progress toward the 90-90-90 goals, let’s remember the importance of CHWs to these aims and accelerate our efforts to improve the sustainability of and support for CHW programs.
