2022 in Review: Building a Pan-African Start-up that strengthens community health systems

By: Wendy Wakhusama

Over the past 5+ years, the Financing Alliance for Health (FAH) has been cognizant of the fact that financing is a key lever in driving greater integration of health services. We have worked with various partners who have enabled us to strengthen health services for 17 governments in the African continent by scaling and integrating financing for community health, primary health care, global health security, and universal health coverage.

In 2022, we continued to remain system orchestrators who primarily serve African governments and public institutions as strategic and technical advisors. We were honored to serve a total of seven national and sub-national governments. We supported these respective governments by deepening their health financing and investment expertise, which saw broadened returns on investments in the communities that we serve.

FAH continued to gain recognition and cement its position as a thought leader in community health systems strengthening in the continent and beyond.  In 2022, we thrived as the go-to experts on community health (CH) financing across various ecosystem players. In collaboration with partners like Africa CDC, we shared this expertise with 30+ African Union member states while still advancing our in-country and online capacity building.

Our front-runner idea and big push towards closing the community health financing gap, currently estimated at USD 4.4 billion funding gap was the launch of the Africa Frontline First Initiative (AFF). We are the originator and seed investor in the ideation of the AFF.

Africa Frontline First is a collaborative initiative that supports the financing and strengthening of integrated and sustainable community health service delivery to achieve health for all. Through unique partnerships between governments, donors, implementers, and technical allies, AFF will institutionalize and scale 200,000 professionalized community health workers across 10 African countries by 2030.

2022 was indeed an exciting year for us, and we look forward to an even more exhilarating 2023. This year we will deepen our work on strengthening community health systems with our clients.

We are grateful to all our 2022 partners who worked with us and trusted us to deliver the vision of mobilizing financing to improve health for all.

As we establish our plans for the year and press on to the tasks ahead, we take stock of what we accomplished in 2022.

Our impact report provides details of our 2022 highlights
