Workload and emerging challenges of community health workers in low- and middle-income countries: A mixed-methods systematic review

by

Authors: Tigist Astale, Tsegereda Abebe, Getnet Mitike

This review sought to summarize and present CHWs’ perceived workload in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Researchers utilized three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Embase) that were customized to search for two key terms: CHWs and workload. A total of 43 primary studies measuring CHW workload, published in English, and conducted in LMICs at any time point were included. Results uncovered that in the majority of studies, CHWs reported having a high workload, mainly due to managing  multiple tasks and lacking means of transport to access households. These findings emphasize the need for program managers to carefully consider decisions to shift additional tasks to  CHWs, taking into account the practicalities and challenges of their working environment. In conjunction, further research is also required to comprehensively measure the workload of CHWs in LMICs.
