A mixed methods study was conducted to explore the roles and practices of CHWs in the delivery of hypertension and diabetes care at primary healthcare (PHC) facilities in Nigeria. Surveys, focus groups, and in-depth interviews were conducted with CHWs and other local and state government stakeholders. Findings from this study demonstrated that, despite capacity constraints, CHWs frequently delivered services beyond their scope of practice, including informal task-shifting practices to meet the needs of the community. Given these findings, authors assert that policymakers should focus on strengthening CHW capacities to safely and optimally perform the wide scope of roles required by implementing initiatives to strengthen the policy environment to support task-sharing, improve guidelines at the point of care, and enhance coordination across levels of healthcare.
