This study aimed to determine what factors motivate village health workers in maternal and child health programs. VHWs from 12 primary health care facilities in Anambra State, Kenya participated in focus group discussions and in-depth interviews. During interviews, researchers collected data on motivating factors that allow VHWs to carry out their duties. Monetary incentives, such as a monthly stipend, were found to be the greatest motivation for VHWs. Other incentives included material goods, such as branded aprons or uniforms. This study reinforces the idea that both non-financial and, in particular, financial compensation are important to sustaining CHW programs.
