Urban Community Health Workers in Punjab, India: A Qualitative Study of ASHAs’ Roles in the Health System

by

Authors: Baldeep K. Dhaliwal, Madhu Gupta, Anuradha Nadda, Shalini Singh, Anita Shet, Kerry Scott, Aakanksha Dutta, Svea Closser

India’s ASHA program is the world’s largest community health worker initiative, but most research has focused on rural areas. This study looked at how urban ASHAs work in Punjab, India. Through interviews, observations, and focus groups, researchers found that urban ASHAs are key in helping vulnerable people access healthcare. However, they face big challenges, including being responsible for too many people, lack of training, low pay, and poor support from the health system. To improve their work, the study recommends better training, stronger leadership, more community involvement, and fair pay. These changes would make healthcare better in cities across India.
