Uptake of Medicaid Billing for Community Health Worker Services in Louisiana, 2022-2023

October 17, 2025 By

Authors: Ashley Wennerstrom, Chris Adkins, Kelsey Witmeier, Angel Whittington, Catherine G Haywood, Marcus A Bachhuber

Louisiana Medicaid began reimbursing community health worker (CHW) services in 2022. An analysis of 2022–2023 data showed that over 10,000 people received about 17,000 CHW services, mostly in urban areas. Most visits involved screenings rather than ongoing support, and family or internal medicine clinics billed most of them. While this marks progress in recognizing CHWs’ work, the overall use of billing was low, suggesting providers need more guidance on CHW roles and how to integrate and bill for their services effectively.
