Unsung heroes in Ghana’s healthcare system the case of community health volunteers and community health management committee

by

Authors: Samuel Egyakwa Ankomah, Adam Fusheini, Sarah Derrett

This research investigates the impact of community health management committees (CHMCs) and community health volunteers (CHVs) on the Ghanaian health system. Conducted in three districts in the Ashanti region, the study involved 35 participants, including health service users and professionals. Findings indicate that the effectiveness of CHMCs and CHVs depends on their selection process, and their involvement enhances resource availability and frontline health activities, leading to improved health outcomes. Leveraging the roles of CHMCs and CHVs can significantly complement government efforts to enhance healthcare services in resource-limited settings like Ghana, highlighting the importance of strengthening their capacities.
