Understanding Trustful Relationships between Community Health Workers and Vulnerable Citizens during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Realist Evaluation

by

Authors: Dorien Vanden Bossche, Sara Willems, Peter Decat

This study aimed to understand how CHWs build and maintain trust with their patients, specifically during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers used a realist evaluation method when analyzing data collected from CHWs and their clients in Ghent, Belgium. Three mental themes–recognition, equality, and reciprocity–emerged regarding trustful relationships between CHWs and their patients. Overall, authors concluded that trust is an essential component to community health work. However, more research is needed to determine whether these findings hold true in a non-COVID context.
