Understanding the profile of community health workers in breast cancer screening education: women’s preferences and insights from a qualitative focus group study

by

Authors: Ilka Jacobs, Dorien Vanden Bossche, Sara Willems, Katrien Vanthomme

This study explored what women in Flanders want from Community Health Workers (CHWs) who support breast cancer screening. Focus group discussions showed that women value CHWs with good knowledge, clear communication, cultural awareness, empathy, and personal experience. Trust was seen as essential, with many preferring female CHWs who had experience with breast cancer screening. The findings highlight that selecting CHWs with the right mix of skills, attitudes, and experience is key to making breast cancer education programs more effective.
