Community health workers (CHWs), doulas, and peer support specialists (PSSs) help address health problems and social challenges in their communities. Although they’ve supported communities for years, California’s Medi-Cal program only recently began covering their services, CHWs and PSSs in July 2022, and doulas in January 2023. In 2024, the California Health Care Foundation brought together people from these three groups to learn from one another, build connections, and explore how they can work together more closely. They shared the history of their roles, the services they offer, and the challenges they face under Medi-Cal. The group found common ground and came up with ideas for future teamwork and advocacy.
