Transforming Health in Post-Conflict Somalia: Priorities from a Multi-Stakeholder Roundtable on the 2025-2029 National Plan

October 17, 2025 By

Authors: Najib Isse Dirie, Mohamed Mustaf Ahmed, Yakub Burhan Abdullahi, Jihaan Hassan, Bashiru Garba, Ahmed Adam Mohamed, Abdirazak Hersi Hassan, Amal Naleye Ali, Ali Haji Adam Abubakar

Somalia’s health system faces severe challenges, with very low service coverage and a major shortage of health workers. A roundtable in Mogadishu brought together government, private sector, and civil society leaders to set priorities for the National Transformation Plan (2025–2029). Participants highlighted four key needs: expanding primary care through community health workers, strengthening health workforce training and rural deployment, improving regulation and accountability, and using digital tools and partnerships to reach underserved areas. While these strategies are promising, progress will depend on stronger coordination, funding, and long-term political commitment.
