Training community health workers to address social isolation in older adults through a quality improvement project

by

Authors: Daniel S. Moran, Bryan A. L’Heureux, Lindsey A. Boisvert, Catherine M. Amarante, Elizabeth J. Morrill, Shannon L. Donnelly, Ellen Flaherty & Sally A. Kraft

This project tested a short training programme to help Community Health Workers (CHWs) support older adults experiencing social isolation. After the two-hour training, CHWs reported better knowledge and confidence, and these improvements continued for at least two months. They also began using the strategies in their regular work to connect older adults with community and support services. The study suggests that brief, practical training can help CHWs better identify and respond to social isolation among older adults.
