The “Community Health Worker Toolkit: Capacity Building in Local Health Departments” helps local health departments (LHDs) recruit and retain community health workers (CHWs), who are vital for connecting communities with health and social services. Due to high turnover rates often linked to dissatisfaction with support and pay, the toolkit offers best practices for hiring and retaining CHWs. It includes guidance on the importance of CHWs, effective integration strategies, candidate review processes, and tools for improving recruitment and retention. Practical resources, such as interview questions and training tips, are also provided to support LHDs in effectively managing their CHW workforce. The toolkit is available on the NACCHO and CPHS websites.
