The objective of this study was to describe CHWs’ roles in smoking cessation education to ensure relevance and accessibility of training. Researchers conducted a needs assessment survey with Latino/a CHWs serving Latino/a communities to assess their roles, tobacco related services, attitudes, and knowledge. CHWs offer various services, primarily health education, and most CHWs assessed and discussed tobacco use, yet reported low confidence in this area. Some CHWs expressed that their clients/patients would use evidence-based nicotine replacement therapies as a smoking cessation treatment if offered and identified “Financial Cost” as a deterrent of use. CHWs’ score on the tobacco knowledge questionnaire indicated low knowledge in areas related to tobacco. These findings emphasize the need for tailored tobacco cessation training for the CHW workforce to decrease tobacco cessation disparities within Latino/a communities.
