This scoping review explores the involvement of community health workers (CHWs) in primary healthcare across WHO-EU countries since 2001, focusing on their roles, training, recruitment, and remuneration. It includes 40 studies from eight countries, revealing variability in CHW involvement, terminology, and strategies. CHWs are typically recruited from within communities, receive some form of training, and play educational, navigational, or supportive roles. The review highlights the social embeddedness of CHWs in their communities and calls for further research detailing CHW involvement, role delineation, and recruitment procedures to inform integration into national health systems. Recommendations include detailed reporting of CHW involvement, rigorous evaluations, and sustainable funding for CHW programs.
