The Role of Community Health Workers in Advancing Universal Health Coverage: A Systematic Review of Effects on Service Coverage, Utilization, and Health Equity

by

Authors: Yem Sokha, Tun Sreypeov, Kem Sokunthea, Yim Sovannra

This review found that community health workers help expand access to healthcare by providing health education, home visits, referrals, screening, follow-up care, and support for diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis, chronic illnesses, and mental health conditions. Their work increases the use of health services and helps reduce barriers to care, especially for underserved communities. However, the study found that their impact is greatest when they receive good training, regular supervision, fair pay, reliable supplies, and strong support from the formal health system.
