The Power of Promotoras

by

Authors: Maithe Enriquez

Hispanics are the largest and fastest-growing population in the U.S., yet they face significant health inequities due to social challenges like limited healthcare access. Community health workers (CHWs), or promotoras in Hispanic communities, play a vital role in improving health outcomes by offering support, education, and care coordination. They have proven effective in managing conditions like diabetes and hypertension, helping individuals adopt healthier behaviors and access needed care. Despite their impact, CHWs are underutilized in healthcare due to a lack of consistent reimbursement. Many states’ Medicaid programs do not cover CHW services, leaving these roles dependent on donations and grants. Expanding reimbursement for CHW services through Medicaid, Medicare, and other insurers could better support their work and enhance health equity for underserved communities.
