The potential effectiveness of community health and nutrition volunteers on mothers’ infant and young children feeding knowledge and practice in remote areas, Hajjah, Yemen

by

Authors: Abdulkareem Ali Hussein Nassar, Ahmed Al-Haddad

This study evaluates the impact of Community Health and Nutrition Volunteers (CHNVs) on improving infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices among mothers in the Hajjah governorate of Yemen. Conducted between January and April 2023, the research involved interviews with 926 mothers in two districts, comparing those in villages with CHNVs to those without. The results showed that mothers in volunteer villages had significantly better knowledge about breastfeeding and complementary feeding. Specifically, they were more likely to exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first two days, engage in mixed feeding under six months, and avoid bottle feeding. The study concludes that CHNVs significantly enhance IYCF knowledge and practices among mothers and recommends further research and expansion to other regions.
