This study examined where community health workers in the United States are employed and how much they are paid. It found that more community health workers are working in healthcare and government, but those employed by social service organizations earn the lowest wages. The study also found that state certification and Medicaid reimbursement have not increased wages, suggesting that better funding and payment systems are needed to support and grow the community health worker workforce.
