The experiences of community health workers when communicating with refugees about COVID-19 vaccines in Syracuse, NY: A qualitative study

by

Authors: Moe Kuroda, Andrea V Shaw, Christina D Campagna

This qualitative study explores Community Health Workers’ (CHWs) experiences in vaccine outreach among refugee populations in Syracuse, NY, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Interviews with CHWs reveal diverse refugee beliefs initially, with low vaccine acceptance. Barriers to vaccine intake include contextual issues and misinformation, while facilitators include CHWs’ trust-building efforts and time. Culturally sensitive strategies, led by CHWs, significantly improved vaccine acceptance among refugees. This research highlights the importance of CHWs’ role in addressing vaccine hesitancy and improving vaccine uptake in vulnerable populations.
