This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of rural Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) during the COVID-19 pandemic in improving access to health services and health outcomes. Fifteen studies from 10 countries were analyzed, indicating that rural CHW interventions increased household access to health services and potentially improved both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 health outcomes. Despite these positive findings, the review emphasizes the need for more rigorous studies during future pandemics to assess the effectiveness of rural CHWs across diverse settings and ascertain the required support for their scalable impact on health outcomes.
