This paper sought to assess the effect of a roving nurse mentor on the coverage and quality of care of CHW services in two vulnerable communities in South Africa. Three household surveys were conducted to assess household coverage of CHW services and structured observations of CHWs working in households were performed to assess the quality of care. Results of this study demonstrated a sustained 50% increase in the number of households visited by a CHW. While the proportion of appropriate health messages given to household members by CHWs remained constant, CHWs performed a greater range of more complex tasks. These findings suggest that supportive supervision is important in optimizing the performance and service coverage of CHWs.
