The Community As A Full Partner: A New Model For Public Health

June 24, 2024 By

Authors: Alice T Chen, Denise O Smith, Bisola O Ojikutu, John Auerbach

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for stronger community engagement in the US public health system. Online surveys of community-based organizations and metropolitan health departments identified key barriers such as mistrust, funding issues, and limited shared decision-making. To address these, six policy recommendations were made: establish community councils for public health decision-making, provide dedicated and flexible funding, simplify procurement and reporting, offer training and technical assistance, and increase public health worker diversity with sustainable funding for community health workers.
