“That Was an Eye Opener for Me”: Mixed-Methods Outcomes Educating Texas Community Health Workers on HPV Vaccination Using Project ECHO®

by

Authors: Shaylen Foley, Ashleigh Flowers, Tralisa Hall, Matthew T Jansen, Michelle Burcin

This study explores the potential of community health workers (CHWs) to boost HPV vaccination rates through education and addressing vaccine hesitancy. The American Cancer Society’s HPV Cancer Free Texas Project implemented an eight-session vaccination education program for CHWs in 2020–2021, offered in English and Spanish. Of the 146 CHWs who participated, there were significant improvements in HPV vaccination knowledge, beliefs, and confidence in communicating about the vaccine. This research highlights the importance of CHWs in promoting HPV vaccination and suggests the need for further efforts to connect CHWs with vaccination opportunities and providers.
