Targeted Violence Against Community Health Workers: A Critical Barrier to Pakistan’s Polio Eradication Goals

by

Authors: Rafay Ali Syed, Javaria Qazi

Workplace violence is a major challenge for healthcare workers in Pakistan, particularly for polio vaccinators who face targeted attacks. These incidents have hindered vaccination efforts, leading to a rise in polio cases and the tragic loss of many workers and security personnel. Misinformation, cultural resistance, and socio-economic challenges worsen the situation. To address this, community-based approaches like involving local volunteers, setting up immunization centers in high-risk areas, partnering with local influencers, and ensuring worker safety are suggested. These steps aim to rebuild trust, improve vaccination coverage, and support Pakistan’s progress toward eradicating polio.
