Sudan, located in Northeast Africa with a population of 48.1 million, has faced ongoing conflict and political instability, including civil wars and fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and paramilitary groups in 2023. This has caused widespread violence, insecurity, and displacement, particularly in Khartoum and Darfur. Sudan’s health system is decentralized, with the Federal Ministry of Health overseeing policies and support, while state and local ministries manage services. In 1976, Sudan adopted primary healthcare (PHC) to reach underserved populations, and community health workers (CHWs) are key in delivering these services. Despite ongoing conflict, the government has launched initiatives like the National Health Recovery and Reform Strategic Plan to improve community health, though challenges persist due to the war.
