Strengthening the role of community health workers through supportive supervision: A Scoping Review

by

Authors: Trimaya Cahya Mulat, Tirta Asprimi Anggraeni, Wahyudi Hardi, Muh Ihsan Kamaruddin, Jessy Andre Mangaya Takke

This review looked at how supportive supervision helps CHWs do their work better. After examining 37 studies, the picture is clear: when CHWs get regular guidance, feedback, and chances to learn with peers, they stay motivated and provide better care. Approaches that use mentorship, shared problem-solving, and community involvement tend to work well. The biggest challenges are limited resources, overworked supervisors, and weak system support. Digital tools and community-based supervision help by making follow-up more consistent and improving how decisions are made. Overall, supportive supervision is key to strong and lasting CHW programs. Structured and tech-assisted supervision can boost CHW confidence, accountability, and impact.
