A study in Tanzania showed that community health workers (CHWs) can play a big role in preventing and managing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and heart disease when they are well-trained, confident, and have the right tools. In the Philippines, barangay health workers (BHWs) face similar challenges; limited training, lack of equipment, and little involvement in NCD programs despite being close to the communities they serve. To strengthen their role, the government should provide regular NCD-focused training, equip local health stations with screening tools, offer fair incentives and supervision, and build public trust in BHWs as health advocates. Investing in BHWs can make NCD prevention more effective and affordable, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
