Strategies and Challenges of a Safe Fireplace Program in Rural Kenya: A Qualitative Study

by

Authors: Mary A Hunter, Kimutai Sylvester, Camerin Rencken, Russell E White, David T Harrington, Patrick M Vivier, Robert K Parker

This study looked at a safe fireplace program aimed at preventing burns in a rural community in Kenya. Researchers conducted in-depth interviews with five community health workers involved in the program. The interviews revealed three key areas: effective education methods, strategies for involving community stakeholders, and challenges in implementation. Participants emphasized that successful burn prevention relies on community engagement, using local peers and leaders rather than outside resources. They also noted concerns about resource availability and maintenance as challenges. The findings can help guide future health programs in developing effective burn prevention strategies in resource-limited areas.
