This study examines the challenges faced by HIV-positive mothers in the Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) programs. Despite increased availability of PMTCT services, many mothers are lost to follow-up (LTFU) or fail to adhere to treatment, leading to new infections. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study found that social factors like family dynamics, fear of HIV disclosure, medication barriers, and poor health system support contribute to LTFU and non-adherence. Community health workers (CHWs) and other healthcare providers also face challenges such as lack of resources and poor support. The study highlights the need to integrate CHWs more effectively into healthcare interventions and to address social factors to improve retention and adherence in PMTCT programs, aiming to meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
