‘She Got Me Through the Toughest Times’: Exploring How Strong Relationships Between Families and Community Health Workers Are Developed in Three Non-Profits in Waitaha Canterbury, New Zealand

by

Authors: Kaaren Mathias, Lisabet Morgan, Annabel Ahuriri-Driscoll, Jeff Foote

This study explored how community-based health workers build trusting relationships with families in three child and youth health services in New Zealand. The study found that trust grew when workers responded to families’ immediate needs, supported them with longer-term challenges, shared experiences, and stayed connected with families over time. Trust was also strengthened when workers had strong support from colleagues and when families felt their culture and values were respected. The findings show that strong, culturally respectful relationships can encourage families to use health services and improve health outcomes.
