Self-Determination in Action: A Scoping Review on Oral Health Training for Indigenous Health Workers Globally

by

Authors: Madison Cachagee, Brianna Poirier, Fernanda Doak, Sneha Sethi, Joanne Hedges, Michael Larkin, Lisa Jamieson

This review looked at training programs designed to help Indigenous Health Workers (IHWs) improve oral health in their communities. Out of 374 articles reviewed, 11 programs met the criteria. These programs covered topics like oral anatomy, childhood oral health, diet, and chronic diseases. The most effective programs were created with input from Indigenous communities and focused on their specific needs. The study highlights the importance of culturally appropriate, Indigenous-led training and calls for more long-term support to reduce oral health disparities.
