Qualitative accounts of community health workers providing and shaping mental health support in climate-vulnerable communities in Bangladesh

by

Authors: Kyra Lilier, Erica Breuer, Samiya A. Selim, Mahmuda Akter, Rainer Sauerborn & Kate Bärnighausen

This study explored how Community Health Workers (CHWs) provide basic mental health support in underserved communities in Bangladesh, where access to professional care is limited. Interviews with 16 CHWs found that mental health training helped them better understand mental health problems and support people in their communities. They used culturally appropriate language and local knowledge to reduce stigma, build trust, and help people feel comfortable discussing mental health. The study recommends providing CHWs with ongoing training, the resources they need, and formal recognition to strengthen community-based mental health services.
