Prediagnostic loss to follow-up in an active case finding tuberculosis programme: a mixed-methods study from rural Bihar, India

by

Authors: Tushar Garg, Vivek Gupta, Dyuti Sen, Madhur Verma, Miranda Brouwer, Rajeshwar Mishra, and Manish Bhardwaj

The World Health Organization’s End TB strategy seeks to reduce the incidence of tuberculosis by at least 80% by the year 2030, but underreporting and underdiagnosis prevents an accurate assessment of progression toward this goal. Tushar Garg and colleagues assessed whether CHWs could be an effective means for identifying and referring presumptive TB cases to receive treatment. The researchers reported that 44.1% of the total 11,146 presumptive TB cases underwent diagnostic evaluation for care. These results suggest that CHWs can be a useful resource for helping meet the 2030 End TB strategy goal.
