Potential facilitators and inhibitors to the implementation and sustainability of the community-based tuberculosis care interventions. A case study from Moshupa, Botswana

November 14, 2024 By

Authors: Gabalape Arnold Sejie, Ozayr H Mahomed

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant health challenge in Botswana, with Moshupa village experiencing particularly high rates. To address this, community-based interventions involving treatment supporters have been implemented. However, this study identifies several facilitators and barriers affecting the success and sustainability of these interventions.Facilitators include effective partnerships between health services and external stakeholders, community empowerment, and clear policies. However, barriers such as inadequate funding, low service provider training, and a lack of incentives for treatment supporters hinder the program’s effectiveness. Improving community TB care requires addressing these challenges, including ensuring sustainable funding, enhancing training for staff, and providing incentives. Additionally, building trust between patients and treatment supporters is crucial for program success. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and policy support to strengthen community TB programs and accelerate progress towards ending TB.
