In October 2018, the world celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Alma Ata declaration at the Global Conference on Primary Care in Astana, Kazakhstan. Acknowledging that the Alma Ata declaration represents a historic landmark for global health practitioners, Partners In Health hosted a one day pre-meeting to the Astana Conference to explore: “Health Systems and Delivery Strategies to Achieve Universal Health Coverage”. Dr. Palazuelos facilitated a panel discussion entitled “The Key Role of Community Health Workers in Integrated Care Delivery Systems.”
The incredible panel featured:
- Magnus Conteh, Executive Director of the Community Health Academy
- Ruth Tarr, a Community Health Assistant, Liberia
- Olasford Wiah, Director of Community Health Services, Ministry of Health, Liberia
- Diana Nambatya Nsubuga, Deputy Country Director – Community Health Partnerships, Living Goods, Uganda
As the conversation began to heat up, members of the audience contributed important insights, including special comments from The Honorable Wilhelmina Jallah, Minister of Health in Liberia; and Jim Campbell, Director of the Health Workforce Department at the World Health Organization. This lively discussion provided insights from the the frontlines of community health in rural communities to how national governments support that work, and finally to what the international community is planning for the future of community health as a core part of universal health coverage.
