Physical and mental health of community health workers in Bolivia: Evidence from a large NGO-run program

by

Authors: Megan Mickelson, Yesenia Pooley, Patricia Monje Cuadrado, Kaerlig Hurtado, Noelle Dunn, Jeff Glenn

This study in Bolivia explored the physical and mental health of volunteer community health workers and how their work affects their wellbeing. The workers generally considered themselves physically healthy, but many faced difficulties accessing routine health checks because of long waiting times and inconvenient service hours. Some also experienced anxiety, depression, and daily stress. At the same time, many said that support from colleagues and leaders, as well as helping people in their communities, improved their mood and wellbeing. The study highlights the need for easier access to preventive healthcare and stronger mental health support for community health workers.
