The U.S. has made progress in preventing HIV and improving access to treatment, but there are still inequalities among different populations. Some individuals may face social isolation or poor quality of life, and navigating the complex healthcare system can be challenging. Community health workers (CHWs) are recognized as essential in connecting clinical care with social support, helping to overcome these barriers. According to the American Public Health Association, CHWs are trusted members of their communities who help people access health and social services. A key type of CHW is a peer worker, someone living with HIV who uses their own experiences to assist others in navigating the healthcare and social services systems.
