by

Authors: Patricia Rodriguez Espinosa PhD, MPH, Evelyn Vázquez PhD, MA, Mona AuYoung PhD, MS, MPH, Frank Zaldivar PhD, Ann Marie Cheney PhD, Dara Sorkin PhD, Robynn Zender MS, Claudia G. Corchado , and Nancy J. Burke PhD

Promotoras and Community health workers (P/CHWs), whether formally certified or not, leverage shared life experiences to serve as trusted leaders in their communities. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, P/CHWs played a pivotal role in designing and implementing culturally relevant outreach, addressing structural barriers, and promoting testing and vaccination in California. This community-centered approach, utilizing the expertise and leadership of P/CHWs, offers insights and lessons for future public health collaborations, emphasizing health equity for historically marginalized communities. The model highlights the potential of P/CHWs to bridge health and social systems, respond effectively to public health emergencies, and address health inequities.
