As malaria cases drop in Cambodia, village malaria workers (VMWs) are seeing fewer patients. To keep them useful, this study tested if they could use new tools to check for other illnesses like dengue and bacterial infections. VMWs in 78 villages were trained to use two test kits. Over a year, they checked 2,425 patients. Only a small number tested positive for dengue or high inflammation. After introducing the new tests, more people visited VMWs. However, some VMWs struggled with using the dengue test correctly, which may have affected results. Still, both VMWs and their communities supported expanding their role beyond malaria.
