Motivation and job satisfaction of community health workers in Ethiopia: a mixed-methods approach

by

Authors: Yohannes Ejigu, Netsanet Abera, Werissaw Haileselassie, Negalign Berhanu, Biniyam Tadesse Haile, Frehiwot Nigatu, Nurhan Tewfik, Yibeltal Kiflie, Girmay Medhin, Fasil Walelign, Mekdes Demissie, Setegn Tigabu, Daniel Taddesse, Tegene Legese Dadi & Alula Teklu

Since 2004, Ethiopia has been using Community health workers (Health Extension Workers – HEWs) who are credited with several achievements in improving the country’s health indicators. However, information about the HEWs’ motivation and job satisfaction is limited. Using a mixed methods study approach, the authors sought to assess the HEWs’ motivation and job satisfaction, as well as the factors that influence them. The study identified that the overall job satisfaction of HEWs was low; with extrinsic factors, such as inadequate pay, limited education and career advancement opportunities being the major sources of demotivation.
