Mapping and analysing community health worker programmes in the Eastern Mediterranean region

by

Authors: Uta Lehmann, Gulin Gedik, Arooj Jalal

Community health worker (CHW) programs are vital for strengthening primary health care (PHC) and achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO). This situational analysis of CHW programs in the EMRO revealed varying program structures across 13 countries, with some having well-established national programs and others with emerging programs. While CHWs contribute to health promotion and service delivery, research on their roles and programs in the region is limited. Weak governance, limited gender equity considerations, and discrepancies in program management and training hinder program effectiveness, highlighting the need for better integration of CHW programs into national health systems and more comprehensive research efforts.
