This study investigated the CHW management of danger signs for severe illness implementing integrated community case management (iCCM) in a rural context in Uganda. Of the children that had been recorded as having a danger sign, 78% were referred by the CHWs as per the iCCM protocol. CHWs play a key role in early symptomatic detection, pre-referral treatment and early referral of children aged <5 years; continuous CHW training is important to reduce the number of referral cases that are missed.
