Management challenges in mHealth: failures of a mobile community health worker surveillance programme in rural Nepal

by

Authors: David J Meyers, Malina Filkins, Alex Harsha Bangura, Ranju Sharma, Ashma Baruwal, Sami Pande, Scott Halliday, Dan Schwarz, Ryan K Schwarz, Duncan S R Maru

The emerging field of mobile health (mHealth) consists of interventions that apply cellular phones and other mobile devices for healthcare purpose such as data collection, clinical decision support, self-care, and CHW management. This rapid expansion of mobile communications systems represents an opportunity to improve the productivity of community health workers in rural areas. This field report provides an example of an mHealth program that had the potential to impact the efficiency of a community health program in rural Nepal, but did not reach completion as a result of poor process planning and management. The authors provide important insights into the design, maintenance, and drawbacks of similar community-based mobile health initiatives and technology innovation projects in general.
