Making the Most of Familismo to Curb the Diabetes Epidemic: Early Evidence of Success Delivering the Same Intervention to Latinas at Risk for and With Diabetes

by

Authors: Maud Joachim-Célestin, Susanne B Montgomery

This study explored the impact of a community health worker-led program for low-income Latina women at risk for or living with diabetes. The program combined support for both pre-diabetic and diabetic individuals, allowing family members to join. Results showed participants at all stages of diabetes benefited, especially those with diabetic family members. Support from partners and group participation improved outcomes. The findings suggest that tapping into Latino cultural values, like family involvement, could help reduce diabetes in this community. The study recommends further research with more participants and longer follow-up.
