In Anambra State, Nigeria, a study examined awareness and practices regarding Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS), a neglected condition caused by the Schistosoma haematobium parasite. Among 530 participants, including community women and community health workers, most had heard of urogenital schistosomiasis but knew nothing about FGS. Community women frequently came into contact with contaminated water and often ignored symptoms or used home remedies instead of seeking medical care. Health workers also lacked knowledge about FGS and treated related symptoms with antibiotics without linking them to the parasite. The study highlights the need for better education on FGS for both community health workers and community members as part of public health programs.
