In this cross-sectional study, researchers aimed to assess the knowledge of health extension workers (HEWs) about mental health issues in Ethiopia. Researchers recruited 259 HEWs across five districts in Jimma Zone. Participants answered a 30-item questionnaire which was designed to collect sociodemographic data, knowledge status, and information regarding HEW attitudes about mental health. Following analysis, authors found that nearly half of the respondents did not have adequate knowledge about mental health. Additionally, 54 percent believed mental illnesses were caused by spiritual possession. Overall, the results of this study suggest that HEWs may need more comprehensive mental health education to effectively lead mental health initiatives in the communities they serve.
