It is what was handed over to us as our heritage and must not be taken away just like that’: Traditional birth attendants’ attitudes towards the elimination of intergenerational female genital mutilation/cutting in Osun State, Nigeria

by

Authors: Rosemary Omolara Fafowora, Sinegugu Evidence Duma

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a harmful practice violating women’s and girls’ rights, often perpetuated through generations to preserve culture. This study assessed traditional birth attendants’ (TBAs) attitudes towards eliminating FGM/C in Osun State, Nigeria, and their readiness for change. Using qualitative interviews with eight TBAs, the study found that TBAs see FGM/C as cultural heritage, resist government efforts, and dismiss information about its dangers. The TBAs’ attitudes are marked by denial and resistance, showing a low readiness for intervention. The study recommends respectful, non-confrontational dialogue between policymakers, health professionals, and community leaders to develop effective FGM/C elimination strategies.
